The news quickly spread throughout the kingdom, with august columnists at most of the nation’s leading newspapers feigning, in lockstep, a lachrymose rending of garments. The lavishly choreographed cry that the king had fallen was echoed across the fruited plain, as if his lengthy history of dementia and physical decline were a sudden revelation.
